I came across new Windows Mobile Applications today that I am trying out on my Palm Treo:

Fring: Fring is an easy way to connect to all your social networking services. It supports Skype, MSN Messenger, ICQ, Google Talk, SIP, Twitter, AIM, and Yahoo, all over WiFi or your data plan.
Most phones, most operating systems

This looks like a great application for those wanting to chat on their mobile or to make cheap phone calls through SkypeOut or other SIP services. It is easy to setup and is especially great for those with integrated Wi-Fi, allowing you to use your mobile phone without a SIM card!

I was, however, disappointed that you can’t make free Skype calls to your Skype contacts, apparently you can only make SkypOut calls. It is also limited as a Twitter application as it only allows you to send updates and not view those of others.

HelloTxt – HelloTxt is an aggregate of microblogging services through which the user can insert their messages on all main microblogging services in a simply and simultaneous way.

Useful service to post updates from your mobile device directly to a series of common social network platforms. One post can be sent to Twitter, Facebook, Bebo and many others. The other nice feature about HelloTxt is that it allows you to see other updates from within the same application.

Have other useful Windows Mobile applications? Let me know about them!

If you live in the US and you make a lot of internation phone calls you may want to check out http://futurephone.com. This is a free service that allows you to make free international phone calls to over 50 countries by calling their gateway access number. The international portion of the call is free, you pay only the call to their Iowa based access number, which with the increasing popularity of unlimited long distance mobile or landline phone plans, makes the service entirely free.

I have not yet used the service to test the quality of the service, but it is definately worth checking out. I hope that they will expand the service to offer gateway access numbers in other areas such as here in Italy!! If you have used the service let me know what you think.

CNet writes about T-Mobiles planned service to offer seamless switching between cell and wi-fi networks. Similar services are also planned to be offered here in Europe by Telecom Italia and Orange, charging between 10 and 15 euros per month for unlimited calling from dual-mode Wi-Fi/cellular phones used in home networks. This is an exciting big step for those anxiously awaiting netphones. The hybrid model is an excellent introduction to the use of netphones and will predictably increase the adoption of the technology with home and business consumers.

It was just a matter of time before someone figured out how to make free cell phone calls by connecting to Skype. In a headline by Slashdot a new software from a company called IPDrum has made this possible. They described the process as follows:
“Basically, you use the free mobile-to-mobile feature of any major carrier to call a dedicated cell phone attached to your computer. That call is then connected to Skype, allowing you to make free cell calls just about anywhere. Just how long till someone does this on a large scale, by overselling the dedicated lines, and starts selling true unlimited cell plans?”
